The Raquette River, now wide and smooth, flows through the Town of Massena on the way to join the St. Lawrence River. Massena was one of the first four towns created when St. Lawrence County was formed in 1802. This friendly community marks the eastern terminus of the Seaway Trail, a federally-designated national scenic byway, and is home to the St. Lawrence-Franklin D. Roosevelt Power Project and Robert Moses State Park. To reach the Park you pass through a tunnel beneath the Eisenhower Locks and could actually drive under an ocean-going cargo ship! In the winter there are 25 km. of cross-country ski trails open in the Park.

There are many places to enjoy nature's beauty in the Massena area, from sandy beaches, picnic areas, marinas, scenic overlooks,  wildlife refuges, and some of the best fishing in the world. Wilson Hill Island, Croil Islands, and Long Sault Islands offer excellent Smallmouth bass angling. The bays between Wilson Hill Island and the Massena intake dam are great for northern pike, Walleyes, and Muskie. The Raquette and nearby Grasse, as they flow through the town, provide some of the best small river angling anywhere.  Winter brings plenty of opportunities for ice fishing. Events in Massena include a Frog Jumping Contest, fishing derbies, Oktoberfest, and the Heritage Festival. During August of 2003 the area hosted the first World Junior Carp Tournament.
